Drop by any time from 1:00-3:00 to talk with local educator, quilter, and community member Karen Ranney for this exploration of African American quilt traditions. She’ll be sharing her knowledge, clips from a documentary on the topic, and will also be giving away some quilting fabric.

We are thrilled that special guest Sonia Terri Gittens will also present an excerpt from her original play, “Sweet Nightmares of the Yellow Quilt.”

A Workshop and Performance exploring the voices of Shakespeare’s women as empowerment for a new age.  Brought to you by New Genesis Productions, a non-profit, youth theater company

For courageous and curious young women ages 11-18

We will create a unique collage of voice and moment using the words from Shakespeare and fusing them with issues that concern women today. (Knowledge of Shakespeare not required)

Black Culture in American Cinema

Blauweiss Films Presents

Event Description:

Join us for a fun evening! Filmmaker Stephen Blauweiss will present clips from eight mostly lesser-known films, providing a brief description of each scene and its context, as well as interesting and funny behind-the-scenes anecdotes, followed by an 8-minute clip of each film. Blauweiss has had a deep interest in black culture throughout his life, with a particular focus on New York City, Harlem and jazz. In honor of Black History Month, he has chosen selections from American cinema in the 20th century that reflect a diverse range of depictions of black culture. Many of these are lesser-known films that anyone who enjoys movies will be happy to discover.

Artists are cultural seed savers, and seed savers are agricultural artists.
To celebrate the creative intersection of arts and agriculture, we commission artists to interpret the varieties in our seed catalog. Each work of art becomes a unique seed pack. The artwork celebrates the beauty, diversity, and cultural importance of the seeds held within each pack. The Art of Seed celebrates the artists who create this important work.

Poetry Generator – Image, Music & Form Class

When:  Thursdays, January 23rd – February 20th, 6-7:30pm

We are all haunted by images both light & dark. Images are powerful and linked to memory & emotion. This will be our jumping off place to dive into the musicality of language in its poetic form.

In this 4 week class we will:
-bring in poems by other writers to study image, musicality & form
-bring in images or music to write about and discuss
-Generate poems from prompts focusing on how image and form shape and influences our work & worldview
-Edit our poems focusing on line and musicality of language

This class is for all levels of writers. Adults and teens 16+ are welcome.

Important: Before class starts please order a copy of The Poet’s Companion by Kim Addonizio & Dorianne Laux and bring to class. This will be our main textbook. Also please bring notebook & pen/pencil, we will be writing & editing in class.

The 4 Week Class $135 & meets on Thursdays 6pm-730 starting Jan 23- Feb 13

Susie DeFord is the author of the poetry collection Dogs of Brooklyn. She studied poetry at Florida State University, and received her MFA from the New School University. Her work has appeared in BOMB, Poets and Artists, Mipoesias, Work Zine, Dog Fancy, Shampoo, the Anthology “Dogs Singing,” amongst others. She has taught writing at Brooklyn Friends School, Berkeley Carroll, and the College of New Rochelle.
