Cost: $90

Food and Drink: Coffee, tea, filtered water and light snacks will be provided

Event Description:

With the most basic of crochet skills (chain and single crochet stitches) you can make your own fabric rugs out of any textile you like, including scrap sheets and t-shirts! You will learn how to make strips, wield a jumbo hook, join your strips, and make a variety of shapes of rugs. Make one for every room in your house, and they’re an ideal housewarming gift too!

Students must know at least chain and single crochet stitches.  If you need to learn or brush up on chain and single crochet, Cal has an online class at http://calpatch.com/online-video-classes-with-cal/, or you can likely find some help on YouTube.

Supplies:

  • Jumbo crochet hook (a few sizes in range of 12-20mm)
  • 1 or more yards of scrap woven fabric (e.g., cotton sheets)
  • 1 or more old t-shirts to cut up
  • Sharp scissors

Cause:

Programs in the Crafts with a Cause! series combine the fun of creating and learning with the joy and fulfillment of giving back- to the earth, to a good cause, to a group doing good work.

Crafts with a Cause! Embroidery Mending with Cal Patch

Date and Time: Sunday June 16th 10 am – 1 pm

Cost: $90

Food and Drink: Coffee, tea, filtered water and light snacks will be provided

Event Description:

Adding a touch of embroidery can turn nearly any plain thing into an art piece or heirloom, and can keep items we love with minor flaws out of the landfill. You can stitch on clothes, home goods, accessories and other textiles you’ve made yourself, or bought pre-made. By embellishing on these items, you can make gifts more personal, commemorate events, hide mending or stains, or just give a tired old item a new life.
We will learn 12 different classic embroidery stitches and experiment on a free-form sampler, or a project of your choice. Once you know how, you’ll want to add a touch of stitched decoration to everything you own, make or give.

Please bring:

  • approximately 18″ square scrap of woven cotton or linen cloth.  An old pillowcase works great.
  • embroidery floss and needles
  • small scissors

Cause:

Programs in the Crafts with a Cause! series combine the fun of creating and learning with the joy and fulfillment of giving back- to the earth, to a good cause, to a group doing good work.

In this class you will learn techniques that will allow you to not just salvage, but improve items you no longer wear due to a small hole or stain.  Keep those clothes out of the landfill! A portion of the registration fee will also be donated to Woodstock Farm Sanctuary (http://woodstocksanctuary.org/).

Bio:

Lindsay Welch of El Marie Macramé is a lifelong Hudson Valley resident who is energized by the opportunity to collaborate with her community through fiber art. Lindsay began crafting macramé in early 2017 out of her home in Highland and during 2018 began to venture into turning her love of knots into a small business: offering workshops, vending at craft markets, consigning pieces to local shops, and creating custom pieces. Lindsay features locally foraged driftwood, thrifted items, and delicate cotton string and rope in her art that includes wall hangings, jewelry, plant hangers, and wedding decor. She also enjoys hiking the Catskills with her pit bull, Riot, cooking, kayaking, yoga, live music, and traveling.
